What Exactly is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease comprises a broad range of signs from no visible symptoms at all, to gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) to full periodontitis which involves loss of bone around the teeth.
The damage of gum disease is caused by certain types of microscopic disease causing bacteria. We call these disease causing bacteria “bad bugs” because they destroy living tissue in our mouths! The mission of these bad bugs is to invade, colonize and devour gum and bone tissue in the mouth AND they are also very involved with other diseases including diabetes, heart disease and cancer! While the presence of bacteria does play a role, the essential element in whether a person will develop gum disease may also have much more to do with their overall nutrition and general health. |
